WOODS OF DESOLATION is moving full force and becoming known as one of the best modern black metal bands so obviously as someone who has been a fan since his split with Vorkuta, I was excited to hear him speak about what motivates his amazing work.
TMF: Please introduce yourself:
WOD: I go by the name D. and perform guitars in Woods of Desolation. I have previously performed bass and drums as well on previous recordings.
TMF: How did you form Woods of Desolation?
WOD: I formed it in 2005 due largely to dissatisfaction with band writing etc. I bought a cheap drum kit and borrowed any recording equipment available and just started recording my ideas.
TMF How did you get into metal music?
WOD: I suppose it was basically tape trading with friends and trading within the “scene”.
TMF: What inspires you to write music?
WOD: The inner creative urge.
TMF: Tell us the meaning behind As The Stars?
WOD: The basic theme is centered on the idea of the separation of body and spirit and the question of the spirits immortality.
TMF: How did the writing process begin?
WOD: It actually started whilst writing for other projects that never eventuated – perhaps rather unorthodoxly then.
TMF: How did you get session musicians for the recording?
WOD: Luke and Old are people I have known for around 10 years now. The inclusion of Vlad (Drudkh) on drums came about through Roman (Drudkh) whom I have been in contact with for a few years now.
TMF: What is your favorite track from your new album?
WOD: I suppose I’m satisfied with all the tracks on “As The Stars”.
TMF: How do you feel about these new genres of metal popping up?
WOD: Don’t really pay much attention to what is happening these days, nor have I for quite a number of years now.
TMF: How did you sign with Northern Silence?
WOD: I sent them a promo and they were interested. No interesting story here I’m afraid.
TMF: What bands influence you?
WOD: I don’t know if I really have any specific band influences. Most of my favourite bands have nothing to do with my music.
TMF: What are your favorite bands?
WOD: Nirvana and Sigur Ros I suppose.
TMF: What genre do you dislike most?
WOD: I dislike most music these days regardless of genre haha.
TMF: Do you plan on ever touring?
WOD: Maybe one day, but nothing is planned for the immediate future. If a tour never eventuates I will not lose any sleep over it.
TMF: Will you do any split albums in the future?
WOD: I don’t think so.
TMF: How is the metal scene in your area?
WOD: Unfortunately I don’t really have a chance to check out many bands anymore.
TMF: Any plans for Woods of Desolation this year?
WOD: Nothing is set as yet; I will wait until inspiration takes hold again – if it ever does.
TMF: Any last words?
