Mories is known for his many projects but GNAW THEIR TONGUES is probably his best known for many reasons. The way he ties in black metal, drone, ambient and noise into nightmarish compositions is beyond comparison to anything else out their. This is what the soundtrack to your darkest fears would sound like.
The chaos created by the entrancing passages, intricate drum patterns and disembodied screams, howls and moans has made this project something to fear but also welcome. The only thing that stands out in this release compared to any other of the previous masterpieces is the clearer production. Not saying that the production needs to be bleak and unintelligible but maybe this takes away from what was once that dark void created by Mories. Everything is there still to create a full blown assault on your ears. The vocals do sound a little more roomy than previous releases which also makes this album slightly unappealing to those who have listened to the previous albums.
Maybe it is because I have listened to “Spit At Me and Wreak Havoc On My Flesh” more times than most that I notice these small things but anyone else would enjoy this to the fullest who is just starting to enjoy a different side of black metal and noise. I am not at all saying this album is not a great release but I would have liked a continuation of “Per Flagellum Sanguemque, Tenebras Veneramus” type of sound. I recommend this album to anyone who is looking for a darker side of noise and ambient music and go backwards in releases to truly unleash the darkness.
