CAINAN DAWN from France are a force to be reckoned with. Since their debut full length Nibiru in 2011, fans have been anxiously awaiting the release of Thavmial till today and it was well worth waiting for. The band may have had a three year gap till now of silence but you can tell when listening to the album that the band spent every moment working hard making Thavmial a strong, solid and evolution in sound.
Thavmial is true French black metal, comparably up there with bands like Mütiilation, Antaeus, Alcest and Peste Noire. With this year seeming to be a strong year for black metal releases like Mayhem’s Psywar which will raise the bar, this album is a strong contender for one of the top black metal release of the year as well. The album is full of blast beats, epic chord progressions and otherworldly vocals with ranges in both growls and screams that can’t be compared to anything you have ever heard. Tracks like “The Brood” and “Vigrid” stand out with their familiar yet modern black metal sound. “The Brood” has that almost old Dimmu Borgir sound and “Vigrid” brings to mind that older Behemoth feel mixing traditional black metal with their own crazy storm of fury.
In the end, it can be said that Caïnan Dawn is the next big thing in the black metal scene and definitely a band to truly keep a close eye on. I do not see this band going down, just further up the ranks and following in the footsteps of other great French black metal bands if not becoming the next big name French black metal band.
