THE ELYSIAN FIELDS – New World Misanthropia

This year has only begun and we already have a plethora of metal albums to look forward to and on my list was this album. It has been almost fifteen years since The Elysian Fields have released a full length (since the release of Suffering G.O.D. Almighty in 2005) and after this long wait, the band has returned with some of their best work to date. New World Misanthropia was released February 11th through Hammer of Damnation and it is the epitome of all the best aspects of black metal, symphonic orchestrations and death metal. This album is as if Septicflesh and Rotting Christ had a demonic love child. The Elysian Fields have been in the metal scene since 1994 so it would be no surprise that after 25 years as a band that this album would be flawless.

Tracks like “The Claws Magna Doctrine” and “Deceiving the Children of Men” are proof that the group have not lost a step but only got stronger. The guitar work is complex and unique to the band’s previous works. The drumming stands out very strong and technical through each track with blistering speeds and precision. The keyboard work is hauntingly hanging over each track without ever crossing that threshold of being overbearing. It gives an atmosphere that is both dark and eerie as well as adding to the onslaught of heaviness. The vocal work is very reminiscent of Septicflesh’s Sumerian Daemons‘ era style. The growls are consistent throughout the album and balance perfectly between instrumental passages and when there should be vocals.

All and all, this album is damn perfect. The instrumentations, the vocals, the atmosphere, the flawless transitions into each track, there is nothing to be said negatively about this album. As a long time fan of The Elysian Fields myself, this is exactly what we fans have been waiting for. If you are a fan of Septicflesh, Rotting Christ or just heavy extreme metal, then buy this album now! You can thank me later.

Overall Score: 9.5/10
